Introducing the Memphis Blast: Zachery Townsend

By Raven Moore

The Blast have seemed to have found their quarterback for the season but have yet to find a starter at running back to line up behind him. Many players on the team posses speed and skill, but one runner, Zachery Townsend, believes that he has what it takes to be the leading guy.

Head coach, Charles Thompson, likes what Townsend brings to the table and thinks that he can be a key contributor to the team.

“Zachery is a very physically gifted running back,” Thompson said. “He has athleticism, agility, power and quick feet. If he can stay healthy, he will be a star.”

Townsend compares his running style to former Ravens’ running back, Ray Rice, and believes that his playing style is similar to that of the Super Bowl champion.

“Ray Rice was balanced, fast and had great vision” Townsend said. “I try best to model my play after him. I’m a very patient runner and I am a good receiver out of the backfield, similar to how Rice was.”

Zachery and his family moved from Indianola, Mississippi to Memphis in 2006 and has lived here since, excluding his time in college. He admits that at the time of his move, he and his brother Cornelius were both skeptical.

“I didn’t like it,” Townsend said. “I was nervous because I had no family or friends, but eventually I started to like it.”

He began playing football in seventh grade and continued playing throughout his high school career, but unfortunately, he didn’t get to play during his time in college. When he returned to Memphis, he was looking for a way back to football.

“I was looking for a way back to the game,” Townsend said. “I found out about the Blast from Omar Finklea, a player already on the team, and I gave it a shot.”

With Townsend and his brother Cornelius both prepping for their first seasons with the team, Zachery expects this season to be one of the best in the franchise’s history.

“Personally, I want to be the best at my position,” Townsend said. “I want myself and the team to reach the next level. My goal for a team is for us to win a championship.”
