Introducing the Memphis Blast: Cole Walker

By Raven Moore

It’s not always the easiest thing to do to be dominant in a new environment, especially when it involves learning a new position. However, Memphis Blast linebacker, Cole Walker, has been one of the team’s most natural fits and has the makings of being a star on the young defense.

Head coach, Charles Thompson, has been a fan of Walker’s game since he first joined the team on the practice field back in February. He’s been so impressed that he’s often given the young linebacker more responsibilities on defense and the title of being one of the unit’s leaders.

“Walker is your quintessential linebacker,” Thompson said. “He’s a physical force against the run, covers ground in pass defense and is a team leader who sets the tone for an intimidating defense.”

Walker is one of the few players on the team who has experience playing beyond the high school ranks. He spent a season playing tight end and long snapper as a member of the Tusculum Pioneers. While at the school, Walker explained that though he loved the environment, he still had some maturing to do.

“College was fun for me,” Walker said. “Tusculum took care of me, I just made careless mistakes while I was there. It definitely taught me that I had a lot to learn, but overall I loved my experience there.”

After leaving the school, Walker was away from the game for five years and when he was recruited to the Memphis Blast by the team’s starting quarterback, Austin Boyles, it seemed like perfect timing.

“I had been looking for a way to get back into the sport,” Walker said. “So, by joining the Blast, it got me back into one of my biggest passions in life.”

Interestingly enough, this is Walker’s first year playing linebacker, but he’s already shown flashes at the position with the Blast and looks forward to returning to the defensive side of the ball.

“I played some defensive end in high school and prior to that,” Walker said. “It feels amazing too be back on the defensive side of the ball. Defense just feels like it’s where I belong.”

Despite being with the team for such a short amount of time, Walker already views the team as his family. He’s developed strong relationships with his teammates and has high hopes for what they’ll be able to accomplish this season.

“I believe that the sky is the limit for us,” Walker said. “My goals for the team are for us to go undefeated and earn a GDFL championship.”

His high expectations are not just limited to the team, but himself too as he wants to make a consistently substantial impact, no matter the opponent.

“I’m looking to make an impact on the team and league each week,” Walker said. “I want to lead the league in tackles, sacks or tackles for loss. I bring heart and a strategic mindset to the team which has taught a lot about every aspect of the game and made me such a determined player.”

Walker and his teammates have been vocal about gaining support around the city and has a message for Blast fans as they prepare themselves for the upcoming season.

“I would like to tell Blast fans to show up to our games,” Walker said. “A lot of exciting things are happening here, and you won’t be disappointed.”
