Blast Chomp Gators

MARK TREE, Ark. – Two touchdowns by RB Jonathan Ray and a relentless defense paced the visiting Memphis Blast (5-3) to a 40-6 victory the Arkansas Gators (3-4) this past Saturday. In the first half, the game was a defensive battle as the Blast scored on a one yard plunge from QB Dre Buford in the first quarter. Ray then ran for a 15 yard TD in the second quarter for a 14-6 halftime lead.

“In the first half we tried to establish the run, said Blast Head Coach Carlos Alexander. “I am tired of playing down to team’s level. We had the Nashville Storm on the ropes and also the team in Oklahoma. They are the two top teams in the nation. I told them it’s time to put our foot on someone’s throat. I wasn’t happy at the half.”

The second half was all Blast. After a defensive stop on the first possession, Ray then scored on an 80 yard scamper on a punt return, to give his team total control of the game. On the Gators next possession, FS Gerald Tate picked off a pass and ran 25 yards to give the Blast a 26-6 lead.

“Going into the game we knew they covered kicks well. The first return was a 40 yarder and we almost broke that one,” said Ray. “I told my team that we can break one.  All I needed was one more block. I faked right and followed my blocks. My team made it easy for me. I really wanted to boost the team so I was looking forward to getting a TD. It energized the whole team for the rest of the game.”

The Blast will be back in action will home game this Saturday at 7 p.m. versus the Bayou Vipers (2-2). The game will be played at Legends Field on the campus of  Whitehaven High School Stadium@ 4851 Elvis Presley Blvd, Memphis, TN 38116
